Sleep paralysis has been described as one of the most terrifying events that a human being can experience. You're right, it can't kill you, but that doesn't really make it any less terrifying.

I no longer use any methods to become aware that I am dreaming. I used to use "reality checks" to test whether or not I was asleep. Then as I payed more and more attention to my dreams I used common themes to recognize when I'm dreaming (I don't do a lot of flying kung fu fights when I'm awake for instance). Now I don't even have to worry about that, I know that I'm dreaming something like 80% of the time without having to do anything special.

If I was trying to accomplish anything it was simply succeeding at doing something extremely difficult. It is very easy to "do" in a dream, it is exceedingly difficult to "do nothing". I set this as a goal because I wanted to accomplish something that I had never done before. The end result is that I now have far greater control over my lucid dreams. This is a nice perk indeed. Some research indicates that meditation actually causes physical changes in the brain. My hope is that these changes will increase the quantity and quality of my lucid dreams.

As for the difference between meditating within the dream world verses the waking world, I don't know. I have considered trying to get in contact with a neurologist or two to see if they might have any insight.

This is truly scary.Sleep paralysis is not a serious condition-could't cause death. But there are people who suffer this chronically. It is individual for all as therapthy

My 86 year old mother is scheduled for cataract surgery, Unfortunately, she and her siblings have been sneezing long and loud at least once a day since they were kids. Years ago they quit trying to figure out the cause of the sneezing. The Surgeon warned us that increase in occular pressure the first few hours and days could cause damage. We are going to try your acupressure. Will let you know how it goes.

Is there a method that you used to become aware that you are dreaming in the first place? Perhaps, you have an answer to this: what is the different between meditating in the world we call "real" and world we call "dream"? What are you trying to accomplish with your meditation?

Comment on The ADD Excuse by Nathaniel

I have been officially diagnosed, it runs in my family, my father and my sister both have it as well. I can't speak for my father or sister, because I wasn't there when they were diagnosed and haven't asked, but I was diagnosed by a psychologist as well (although whether or not he specialized in ADD I do not know), not by a random doctor doing exploratory prescriptions. I'm not denying that it is something real. I have noticed things like the fact that stimulants and depressants seem to work very differently in people with ADD than they do with so called "normal" people.

What you did was the correct thing to do. You didn't use your "disorder" as a crutch and you attempted to overcome it. Sure, you struggled as we all do, but you wouldn't allow yourself to be doped up or be called stupid. I too have always had trouble making friends but so what? Dr. Seus got it right when he said "those that matter don't mind, and those that mind don't matter." I wouldn't want to be friends with anyone who wouldn't want to have me as a friend anyhow. In any case, you are the exception, not the rule. It is my honest belief that ADD/ADHD are SEVERELY over/misdiagnosed and that the majority of cases are simply the natural result of kids being bored... which is often caused by ill-informed teachers who simply don't know how to keep kids attention when covering boring topics. It's also caused by the fact that kids are not taught HOW to learn, only that they must, and even then they're not taught why they must, or why the reason the propose are relevant at all.

Regardless of whether ADD/ADHD exists, and whether or not I'm "a giant douchebag with shit for brains" you do realize that you took the course of action that I suggested? You didn't use your disorder as a crutch and you tried to overcome and accept your own shortcomings without allowing them to dope you up. That was my entire point from the start. If we treat all kids like this, teach them how to learn, teach them discipline, teach them to overcome/accept their differences and stop trying to dope up the deviants, I think we would be much better off. It won't cure what we call ADD/ADHD, and for those that have it, it will always be a struggle (as it seems to be for the both of us), but it will help a lot more than doping people up.

On a side note, you don't have to apologize for thinking anything, even if it is thinking ill of someone. I'm fine with your opinion of me. I happen to disagree, but that's neither here nor there. I also don't really think you're sorry... and that's okay too. :P
