I’m finally done with my advanced animation final. It took quite a bit of time and energy but I think I managed to do it fairly well. This is what those pesky fairies get for trying to wake up sleepy children in the middle of the night.
The modeling and animation was all done in 3DS Max and the editing was done in Adobe Aftereffects. Special thanks to my lovely wife for lending her voice to both characters in the scene and sounddogs.com for the royalty free twinkling magic noise in the background.

Scott - 3D Metropolis:
Nicely done. The sound definitely helps sell it, especially for the splat! It’s a great little story for a short.
I like that the fairy gives off her own light - did you place light sources inside the character?

There is an omni light set right where the wings touch (just behind her back). It’s set to “ambient only” so it shines through everything. As you can see, the little girl’s face receives some of the pink light when the fairy flies in close.
The fairy model is very low-poly and next to no detail, she has no face, no fingers, no toes. So I had to do something to liven up the character a bit. I decided that a little bit of fairy light was just the right touch she needed.
Thanks for the compliments! Heh, not bad sound for my cruddy little microphone. ^_^

Just thought that everyone should know, I made a perfect score on this one. That’s good because I am really proud of it. I know Mary was glad to hear it too, considering she helped supply the voices.

Thank you very much, I appreciate the visit. There will be much more to come as well. ^_^

OMG Nathaniel! The poor fairies….. I guess the preteen years are not a good time to have them popping around to show you the magical world, huh?
Love it!

LOL, yeah, no kidding. Seeing how my sister and my wife react to people attempting to wake them. I would imagine that almost every little girl would be grumpy if she was trying to be awakened by anything, including fairies. No innocent eye rubbing, fascination, or running off on magical adventures. It’s more like “5 more minuets!” SPLAT!
I’m glad you like it. So far, everyone does. It’s so terrible but it’s funny. I had a ton of fun making it.

LOL! You are so right about that Nathaniel!!!!
Wild horses won’t be able to drag me off my bed if I didn’t have to wake up, much less a fairy who wants to go on an adventure.
BTW, I am thinking of getting myself one of those alarm clocks that vibrates and hides from you. Maybe that’ll get me off my bed at a reasonable hour.
:)
15 November 2007, 6:15 pmNathaniel:
Mary and I have two alarm clocks and two cell phones. If we really need to wake up, that means we’ve got 6 alarms that we can set. On top of that the two alarm clocks are on either side of the bed and are set to really annoying radio stations… but not quite, so that it’s really annoying and has some static to it.
If you really need to wake up, make sure your alarm clock is out of arms reach. That way you have to get up and go turn it off. You can’t just slap it.

Nathaniel, I could be going through a minefield to find my alarm clock, but nothing will stop me from going back to bed…..
:)
